The Colour and the Pig

Recent Street Art from Hosier and ACDC Lanes. Some impressive colourful art this time around as well as an interesting monochrome piece. The large pig is from ACDC lane and I am not sure whether it is a protest piece as it is opposite a popular Sth American restaurant that serves a lot of meat dishes. I am curious whether anyone will think that it is a protest piece. However I like both the anatomical pig art and the restaurant.

I noticed something interesting with the image below, it is a very similar image to one I photographed a few weeks earlier but it has been repainted and moved across about 2 meters and incorporated into another piece. See this link for the older picture.

Hosier Lane Street Art: November Update 2

A second November visit to Hosier Lane produced some impressive pieces. I went back a few days after these were taken and they were mostly gone.

Hosier Lane Street Art: November Updates

The number of new pieces have exploded lately in Hosier Lane. I have to visit every few days now to enjoy a wander down the lanes and to make sure I at least see some of the new pieces (before they disappear or are badly tagged). Changes are happening on a daily basis…if I am lucky I have my camera with me, though I often use my iPhone if I get the feeling the piece won’t survive the night or until I bring my camera long. Some positions in the lanes are prime and work has a very short viewing window/survival rate.

Spring Art in Hosier Lane

Some images from earlier in Spring. The weather had been improving and that seemed to have brought out the artists and a higher turn-over of art on the walls of Hosier Lane.

I quite like the detail on this one – a lot of effort for a work that will only last a day or so.

Hosier Lane Updates

While my focus over Winter and Spring has been heading into the wilds for hours of serenity (and bird pics), I have still been visiting my usual city haunts and exploring for new sites. I walked down Hosier Lane, in Melbourne CBD, a while back and took a few shots of colourful and interesting works.

July Street Art Updates Part II

A few weeks later, I went back to the laneways to see how many of the street art pieces were still around from my previous visit . I am noticing that there are a few spots that are very popular for artists while other areas are left alone for quite some time, eventually being painted over once the taggers have left their marks.

Hosier Lane Selfies

I walked through Hosier Lane yesterday to check the latest wall art and found quite a few people visiting – many internationals, including a Spanish family, who I kept seeing around where I was photographing. I ended up taking a few street shots of them as well as they were funny to watch, enjoying themselves. I was using my very wide angle lens so I could not stand right back and pretend that I was doing anything other than taking photos of them…other than a quick glance they did not seem to mind at all

Protest and Statement Street Art

At various street art sites you can always find good examples of protest and statement art. They are usually much smaller and one needs to look in the out of the way places along the laneway walls. The pictures below were taken in the last week.

Protest Art: Posters, Stencils, Stickers, Balaclavas

Amongst the large murals and spray-painted images in Hosier  and Rutledge Lanes are quite a few smaller ones. Many are comments, statements, protests and funny thoughts. I like finding these more unusual images.

(Update: I walked through Hosier Lane today and many of the larger pieces that I have posted over the last few days that were taken a few weeks ago are now gone or are partially obscured by other artists work. Much of the new work seems to be large ornate tags rather than pictures  – I will have a look after the long weekend coming up)

Laneways of Street Art

Moving further down Hosier Lane there is a looping alley called Rutledge Lane with its own artwork on every wall and surface. I spent a few minutes watching an artist work as well as helping a few tourists take some photos of themselves with the walls…sometime the selfie sticks are just not long enough.

Melbourne Laneway Street Art

Continuing from yesterday’s post on some of the recent street art in Hosier Lane during May. Another week or two and much of this will be gone and covered by other pieces (or a mess of tags until an artist claims a chunk of wall).

And finding treasure in colour…

I have now explored much of the Melbourne CBD looking for good pockets of street art. There are a few major spots (like Hosier Lane, Croft Alley and ACDC Lane) that I will keep returning to as the art changes almost on a daily basis – especially in Hosier Lane – the most active and visited of the Street Art Alleys. Below is some of the Hosier Lane artwork taken a few weeks ago.
