After Xmas holidays came to an end earlier this year, I was back at work and spending lunchtimes checking out the CBD street art scene again. I have taken a number of shots in the last few months and thought I had better catch-up with posting them. As usual there were some fine pieces along the walls of Hosier and Rutledge Lanes. Highlights were the portraits and the abstracts…
Wrdsmth is a LA based street artist with an interesting poetic style. Like Banksy he prefers to remain anonymous – though photos indicate that he is male. He visited Melbourne for the first time last year and after being impressed by the local street scene decided to leave his own mark, a series of clever and insightful words of wisdom pasted up and stencilled around the CBD, Fitzroy and St Kilda. I kept seeing them around town and thought I would photograph a few before they all disappeared.
There are so many good murals in this series of Alleys and Laneways I thought I would break the post into two parts.
Didn’t want to name this one in the title – it is another informally named lane: Piss-stain Alley. It is a group of small alleys and lanes chock full of interesting pieces well away from the usual areas of street art on public display but still in the CBD.
Exploring Blender Lane recently I met a couple of the local studio artists who gave me a bit of a history of the laneway. One of the little nuggets of information that they gave me (maybe true maybe not) was that the end of the laneway was the 2nd oldest stencil art street gallery in the world – the oldest was the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Blender Lane is extensively layered with years of stencils with some very nice pieces that have to be picked out amongst the colour and chaos…
I have been following a number of artists and photographers on Instagram that I have met in the various Laneways and in one post I had noticed a reference to their favourite spot. It was to a Laneway that I had not heard of so after a bit of research, I found Blender Lane. It turns out it is actually an unnamed alley that the locals have named. It is short and has good quality art work along its sidesand at the end of it there is a covered car that is kept there by one of the local artists that has a studio nearby.
After a few weeks break I found that whole laneways had been resprayed. I quickly explored and photographed as many as I could before the work was over-sprayed or tagged. Some of the best was found in ACDC Lane off Flinders Lane.

Over a few days I watched a new mural being created in AC DC Lane. Multi-story high man with a large tree branch. There has been a lot of construction work within the area of ACDC Lane and Duckboard Place. It makes a nice change to have something new and interesting to look at rather than construction vehicles and piles of excavation mess.
I passed through Hosier Lane in early Summer to photograph any new wall murals. I found a nice looking Snow Leopard and around the corner in the little lane that runs off Hosier – Rutledge Lane, I found a lesson in how to use spray cans to make simple pictures. I watched for a while as several artists showed a group of office workers, on a lunchtime team building exercise, how using simple effects they could create an impressive image. It was interesting to watch how many steps it can take to create some of the 3d effects that street artists use.

I had a catch-up with some old work colleagues last week in a part of the city that I rarely visit. On the walk back down Flinders Lane to get to the train station, I noticed some decent street art on a Laneway wall. Flinders Ct is a narrow laneway between Flinders Lane and Flinders St and runs parallel to Elizabeth St. I recognised one of the old factory/warehouse buildings in the middle of the lane and realised that this laneway was one I had explored before when looking for old architecture but at that time there hadn’t been any art work. The work looks fairly fresh and is mostly complete murals. I went back earlier this week and photographed the various walls…I will be adding this new site to my regular survey walks.

I visit Hosier Lane several times a week to look for new art and I can see and appreciate the constant changes. Sometimes when looking for more obscure pieces I look up and see some large pieces that have lasted a while due to their difficult position and the effort required to climb or build scaffolding to work on them. After I photographed the usual spots I found a way up into the parking building that borders one of the laneways and shot the higher walls. The access gave a new and interesting perspective on the art and laneway.

Recent Street Art from Hosier and ACDC Lanes. Some impressive colourful art this time around as well as an interesting monochrome piece. The large pig is from ACDC lane and I am not sure whether it is a protest piece as it is opposite a popular Sth American restaurant that serves a lot of meat dishes. I am curious whether anyone will think that it is a protest piece. However I like both the anatomical pig art and the restaurant.
I noticed something interesting with the image below, it is a very similar image to one I photographed a few weeks earlier but it has been repainted and moved across about 2 meters and incorporated into another piece. See this link for the older picture.

A second November visit to Hosier Lane produced some impressive pieces. I went back a few days after these were taken and they were mostly gone.

The number of new pieces have exploded lately in Hosier Lane. I have to visit every few days now to enjoy a wander down the lanes and to make sure I at least see some of the new pieces (before they disappear or are badly tagged). Changes are happening on a daily basis…if I am lucky I have my camera with me, though I often use my iPhone if I get the feeling the piece won’t survive the night or until I bring my camera long. Some positions in the lanes are prime and work has a very short viewing window/survival rate.
