A family of one legged Stilts…

Just to the north of the coastal bird-hide in the Lake Borrie Lagoons (Western Treatment Plant) is the mouth of the Little River. It is a great spot for various roosting birds at the high tides. On this occasion we found dozens of Red-necked Avocet roosting and preening and a few metres a small family of Black-winged Stilts.

  1. Nice find Malt, it good how the stilts and avocets have such a good relationship wherever you go. I have seen a stilt defend a placid avocet against a intruding ibis, I feature their relationship in my book. It is good that not all the waders are migratory. Enjoy you week and keep warm 😊

    • We quite often see them together at the lagoons. I see so many birds together that I figured it was just food and geography proximity and never noticed or thought about deliberate co-locations. I will watch for it in future….thanks Ashley.
